Majnun and the Letter-Carrier

Majnun loved Layla, and she loved him, but her parents arranged for her to marry someone else who lived in a city that was a hundred miles away. Majnun sought out the letter-carrier. “I need you to take a message to Layla.” The letter-carrier agreed, and Majnun walked alongside him, dictating his message of love. He walked ten miles, speaking only of Layla. “Will your message never end?” the letter-carrier asked. Majnun didn’t stop. Ten miles. Another ten miles. Majnun walked a hundred miles speaking only of Layla. He did not need the letter-carrier after all: Majnun himself had come. TINY T TALES ALES FROM THE SUFIS 39
