The Traveler and the Teacher

A wealthy man had traveled far to meet a famous teacher. He had studied the teacher’s words; now they would meet in person. He reached the teacher’s door and knocked. “Come in!” said a friendly voice. When he entered the room, he saw the teacher sitting on the floor, and there wasn’t any furniture. “But where is the furniture?” asked the traveler. “Where is yours?” the teacher replied. “I’m just a visitor here. It wouldn’t make sense to try to carry furniture with me.” “In this world we’re all just visitors,” replied the teacher. “We’re here, and then, we’re gone.” TINY T TALES ALES FROM THE SUFIS 49
