Majnun’s Blood

Layla needed her maid to find Majnun among the beggars, so she devised a test. “Take this knife and tell them: Layla is ill, and Majnun’s blood is the only medicine that can cure her.” Seeing the knife, Majnun didn’t hesitate. “Blood means nothing; I would give my life for her.” But when he went to cut himself, not even a drop of blood came out. He had starved himself so long that he was only skin and bone. Finally, he was able to draw forth a single drop. “That’s all I have left,” he said. “It is for her.”
